Sometimes I don't feel like wearing makeup.
Sometimes I have huge bags under my eyes.
Sometimes I want to look edgy and sophisticated.
So sometimes, I wear glasses. As I was perusing images of old and new Hollywood, I found that a handful of women agree: glasses can act as cover up. A good pair of glasses will cover the bad (puffs) and frame the beautiful (eyes). Glasses are the ultimate accessory for pulling together a look.
OLD HOLLYWOOD
Here's Grace Kelly at a formal affair sporting cat eye frames. She looks chic in her pearls and strapless gown, but her glasses really make this look for me. It's unexpected to see frames at a black tie event - especially on Grace Kelly. Breath of fresh air!

I was pleasantly surprised to find a photo of Brigitte Bardot in glasses. She doesn't strike me as the type who would wear glasses in a promo shoot. I like how it doesn't take away from her beauty, but enhances it.

Marilyn Monroe in glasses? How cute is this? It looks like a promo shot, but it's so compelling. A bombshell of royal proportions in cat eyes, and a turban - it so works. Full pancake make-up and fake eyelashes help, don't you think?
NEW HOLLYWOOD
Cate Blanchett can do no wrong, but she's even better in glasses. She looks fresh and effortless. This is isn't a nod to old Hollywood glamour, but it's very modern and clean.

Cute. I personally think Kirsten Dunst can come across as kinda schleppy, but look how chic she looks here. I'd say it's thanks to the glasses.

I love these vintage frames on Chloe Sevigny. I can recall the first moment I saw this image of her in Lanvin and vintage glasses - edgy but sweet, kind of how I imagine Chloe is.

Diane Kruger could wear fish bones on her head and still be the most attractive woman in the room. That being said, I think she looks pretty smart in these oversized frames.
I realize that the New and Old Hollywood looks are all BLONDES. Not an intentional or subliminal message that blondes look better in glasses...or need glasses...or anything, really. CO-INKY-DINKS! Crazy. So go! Go put on your glases!
